What You Need to Know About GOP Leadership Elections

Published

on

Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives are set to hold leadership elections Tuesday, despite conservative leaders calling for a delay in the elections given how many House races remain undecided.

Here are four positions members will vote on as they prepare for the next Congress.

1. Speaker of the House

Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., will face a challenger from the House Freedom Caucus for the speaker of the House position, likely Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., though it has not been confirmed, The Daily Signal previously reported.

McCarthy currently serves as the House minority leader while Biggs served as the House Freedom Caucus‘ chairman, the most conservative caucus, from 2019 to 2021.

According to the U.S. House of Representatives website, “the speaker acts as leader of the House and combines several institutional and administrative roles.”

Whoever holds the role, currently held by Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., is also second in line for the presidency behind Vice President Kamala Harris.

“The Speaker recognizes Members to speak on the House Floor or make motions during Floor proceedings. The Speaker makes many important rulings and decisions in the House,” Ballotpedia says.

“The Speaker may debate or vote, but typically only occasionally does so. The Speaker also serves as an ex officio member of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence,” according to Ballotpedia.

2. House Majority Leader

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., is running unopposed to be the next House majority leader, a decision he announced on the Wednesday after Election Day.

“The American people deserve a House of Representatives that can move the agenda that was promised to them on the campaign trail,” Scalise wrote in a letter sent to fellow Republicans last week.

“As your Majority Leader, I will work relentlessly to usher our vision through the House and show the country how conservative ideas can solve the problems that families are facing,” Scalise said.

Scalise currently holds the position of Republican whip, a spot he has held for nearly 10 years.

“This officer is charged with scheduling legislation for floor consideration; planning the daily, weekly, and annual legislative agendas; consulting with Members to gauge party sentiment; and, generally working to advance the goals of the majority party,” the History, Art, and Archives for the U.S. House of Representatives website says.

3. House Majority Whip

Reps. Jim Banks, R-Ind.; Tom Emmer, R-Minn.; and Drew Ferguson, R-Ga., are running for the House majority whip position.

“Whips assist leadership in managing their party’s legislative program on the House floor,” according to the U.S. House of Representatives website.

Banks currently serves on the House Committee on Armed Services, the House Committee on Education and Labor, and the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs and is the Republican Study Committee chairman, according to his website. The American Principles Project endorsed Banks for the position last week, The Daily Signal previously reported.

Emmer is the National Republican Congressional Committee chairman, a spot he was reelected to in 2020, and is on the House Committee on Financial Services, according to his website.

Ferguson is on the Committee on Ways and Means and serves on the Taiwan Caucus, the Border Security Caucus, and the House Army Caucus, among others, according to his website.

4. House Conference Chair

Reps. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., and Byron Donalds, R-Fla., are running to be the House Conference chair.

Stefanik is the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference, a position she was elected to in May 2021 to replace Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo.

“Today, I humbly ask to earn your vote for House Republican Conference Chair to keep our message unified and to build on the hard work and success we have accomplished together as we work to legislate and accomplish our Commitment to America,” the No. 3 Republican said in a letter for GOP colleagues, Townhall reported last week.

Donalds officially launched his bid for the position on Thursday, the Daily Caller reported.

“Over the past two years, it’s been abundantly clear that families across the nation are dissatisfied with the political climate and are desperate for change. Our party has the chance to answer this call, which is why I humbly ask for your support as I endeavor to become Chair of the House GOP Conference,” Donalds said in a letter to fellow House Republicans.

“The House Republican Conference Chairman presides over conference meetings, which are composed of all members of the Republican party,” the History, Art, and Archives for the U.S. House of Representatives website says.

“The House Republican Conference serves as the organizational forum to elect party leaders at the outset of each new Congress. The conference meets on a weekly basis to discuss party policy, pending legislative issues, and other matters of mutual concern,” the website also says.

Here’s Who Will Replace Nancy Pelosi to Lead House Democrats

Published

on

House Democrats have chosen Rep. Hakeem Jeffries to follow Nancy Pelosi in leading Democrats in the next Congress as minority leader.

Jeffries, a 52-year-old New York Democrat, is a member of the House Judiciary Committee and the House Budget Committee as well as chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. He is avidly anti-former President Donald Trump, has painted Republicans as “extreme MAGA Republicans” who wish to “criminalize abortion care, end Social Security, and undermine Democracy,” and has repeatedly questioned the results of the 2016 election.

“Humbled to be elected incoming House Democratic Leader,” he said Wednesday in a Twitter post. “Ready to get to work.”

Leftist groups and Democrats celebrated Jeffries’ promotion. MeidasTouch, a progressive political action committee, predicted that he would be the “GOP’s worst nightmare.”

Conservative groups pointed out that Jeffries has repeatedly questioned the results of the 2016 election, claiming it was “ILLEGITIMATE.”

“America deserves to know whether we have a FAKE President in the Oval Office,” he tweeted in 2018

Longtime California Democrat Pelosi had announced Nov. 17 that she would not seek reelection to Democratic leadership in the next Congress, saying: “For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic caucus that I so deeply respect.”

“There is no greater special honor for me than to stand on this floor and to speak for the people of San Francisco,” she added. “This I will continue to do as a member of the House speaking for the people of San Francisco, serving the great state of California and defending our Constitution.”

Pelosi was the first woman to control the House of Representatives. Under her leadership, Democrats have pushed some of the most radical legislation the United States has ever seen, including the Women’s Health Protection Act and the Respect for Marriage Act.

The headline of this article has been updated to reflect Jeffries’ new role.

How Hailey Bieber is channeling Princess Diana with chic workout ensembles

Published

on

Hailey Bieber has made no secret of the fact she looks to Princess Diana for style inspiration, with the model even doing a copy-cat photoshoot for Vogue Paris in 2019.

But over the years, the 26-year-old has increasingly turned to the royal’s signature low-key looks when putting together her own casual ensembles.

Just this week, the starlet once again stepped out in an outfit that prompted a slew of comparisons to Princess Di – but it is far from the first time she has taken a leaf out of the royal’s lookbook.

The late mother of Prince William, 40 and Prince Harry, 38, knew how to pick a look and make it work for her busy royal life, capturing the world’s attention every time she stepped out.

Indeed, the ‘people’s princess’ has remained a fashion icon to millions across the globe, and many have spotted the way Hailey, 26, consistently channels the late royal’s effortless off-duty style.

Model Hailey (pictured in 2019) has become known for putting her own millennial twists on the late Princess Diana’s iconic off-duty looks (pictured in 1997) – having previously hailed the royal as an ‘inspiration’

When it came to Princess Diana, each one of her outfits was an event in itself – as proven by the fact she could capture the world’s attention every time she stepped out to workout.

Since becoming a name in the fashion industry, Hailey has also been celebrated for her street style, with the model’s everyday uniform usually consisting of oversized tailoring and cycling shorts.

In fact, many beady-eyed fashion lovers have noted the way her casual ensembles draw direct inspiration from Princess Diana – and it’s no coincidence.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar in August, Hailey gushed about the Princess Diana expressed herself through style, despite being one of the most photographed women in the world.

Hailey (pictured left in 2021 and right in 2019) is particularly found of rocking a graphic print top or sweater much like Princess Diana

She began: ‘I was really inspired by the fact that she was the most-looked-at woman in the world at that time, of all time, and she did what she wanted with her style.

‘She really expressed herself through her style despite being in the position she was in.’

Hailey went on to talk about the media attention and the paparazzi she encounters on a daily basis as she continued: ‘I get photographed so much that I feel like sometimes I put pressure on myself. If I’m just throwing on jeans and a T-shirt, I want it to be a dope pair of jeans and a great T-shirt!’

In recent years, Hailey most often sports Princess Diana’s signature baggy pullover sweater, shorts, and chunky runners combo.

However, the model often updates the look with oversized sweaters that cover her shorts, or swapping the shorts of leggings instead. Elsewhere, she swaps out Princess Diana’s trusty trainers for fluffy sandals.

Harper’s Bazaar recently praised the way Hailey has worked to make the style her own, stating: ‘Though Bieber’s looks are hypercontemporary, her approach is ultra old-school. She dreams up different ‘vibes’ (to use her favourite word) for trips and events, whether it’s a vacation in the Northwest or a friend’s wedding.

‘Her process is true fashion-icon behavior. In fact, it recalls that of Diana, to whom Bieber paid tribute in a magazine shoot in 2019 and who also made carefully considered fashion choices with whimsy and ease.’

Back in August 2019, Hailey shared images from her Vogue Paris photo shoot, which was inspired by Princess Diana’s off-duty style while she was running errands in London.

Hailey was clearly thrilled to have been given the opportunity to step into Princess Diana’s shoes, describing the royal as ‘amazingly beautiful and iconically stylish’ on Instagram as she shared images from the shoot.

‘All credit and inspo to the amazingly beautiful and iconically stylish Princess Diana who I’ve looked to for style inspiration for as long as I can remember,’ Hailey wrote.

She added: ‘Thank you for leaving behind such an iconic fashion and style legacy.’

The photo shoot involved Princess Diana’s more causal moments from when she was snapped by the paparazzi in the ’90s, including one moment of her holding her car keys in her mouth while digging through her bag.

Hailey then mimicked this look for the photo shoot by also placing car keys in between her teeth.

The outfit was then made similar with biker shorts, which Diana was known to wear around town, and an oversized sweatshirt.

She then paired the look with ankle socks and tennis shoes, both of which Diana was pictured wearing.

For hair, Hailey left her short blonde locks messy and pushed back to mirror that of Princess Diana during the time.

Another paparazzi picture Hailey was inspired by for her shoot with Vogue involved Princess Diana wearing blue jeans with cowboy boots and an oversized blazer to the Guards Polo Club in Berkshire.

Hailey mirrored the outfit with modern alterations but created an overall look similar to what Diana, even down to the baseball cap.

‘I was never a fan of Hailey Bieber until NOW,’ one person wrote after seeing the new shoot. ‘She is absolutely killing it in each and every photo, serve that Princess Diana vibe gal.’

Other people were in agreement, writing: ‘Hailey Bieber Inspired by Princess Diana for Vogue Paris. She’s flawless, it’s unfair.’

Another fan thought it was the ‘best shoot’ Hailey has participated in since the beginning of her career. ‘This shoot was so sophisticated and spot on with the inspiring of Princess Diana,’ they wrote.

The model isn’t the only one known to channel Princess Diana, as Kate Middleton, 40 and Meghan Markle, 41, have often turned to their husband’s late mother for fashion inspiration.
