The vast majority of Americans (88%) believe that marijuana should either be allowed for adult recreational and medical use (59%) or for medical use alone (30%).
According to a Pew Research Center study performed from October 10 to 16, 2022, only one in ten people (10%) believe that marijuana use should not be allowed. These opinions haven’t changed much since April 2021.
The latest study comes after President Joe Biden ordered his staff to reassess how marijuana is classified under federal law and decided to pardon those found guilty of federal marijuana possession charges. It was circulated prior to the Nov. 8 midterm elections, when two states joined the 19 plus the District of Columbia in legalizing marijuana for recreational use.
According to a different Gallup survey question that asks whether marijuana usage should be allowed without specifying whether it would be legalized for recreational or medical use, there has been a sharp increase in popular support for marijuana legalization over time.
The record-high level of support for legalization Gallup observed in 2021 is matched this year by 68% of respondents who believe marijuana should be legal.
