20 social equity applicants and 13 non-social equity applicants were granted licenses to run adult-use establishments, according to Crain’s Detroit Business.
Voters in Michigan approved the adult-use market in 2018, and sales began on December 1st across the state.
However, it wasn’t until November 2020 that Detroit’s city council authorized the selling of recreational marijuana.
The city’s authorities were expected to give applicants from communities that have been disproportionately affected by the war on drugs half of the 160 eligible licenses for retail, micro-cultivation, and consumption lounges.
Anthony Zander, the director of the Department of Civil Rights, Inclusion & Opportunity, announced that there will be two more rounds of applications; round two is anticipated to start at the end of January.
